The luster on this penny made it difficult for a lighting challenged person such as myself to get a god picture. I hope the pictures are good enough to get a ballpark grading. The whitish area in the lettering of United appears like a struck through oil (slightly different finish on the coin) when viewed through a loupe.

Can you show a picture of the edge? I'm thinking it's been re-plated.

Given the pics posted, I do believe we're looking at a plated coin--not that uncommon for '43 cents, unfortunately.

Better pics needed, these are too soft and dark to evaluate.

I don't think its plated but not sure. This was my father's and has been sealed away for I don't know how many years. I have 13 more like it and 2 Ds and an S plus another dozen gray toned ones.

I did scratch the edge of the coin as well. First with a dental pick which was dull and then with an eyeglass screwdriver. I don't know if the scratches will show in the edge pictures.

Front and back again. Pictures taken with different cameras. (Battery died in one.)

Definitely a reprocessed steelie. The edge should not be shiny. Also, the mirror-like appearance is a dead giveaway.

Color/appearance is all wrong for an original surface coin. Damaged/processed.

Agree - reprocessed, and the plating is wearing off in the places that you notice are "lighter".
