Last year, I bought a 2023 VDB-V Lincoln Cent because I collect pennies. This year, I just bought a 2023 Edith Kanaka'ole Quarter with the die clash because it's an awesome error coin. With both purchases, I was not concerned about future price appreciation. The die clash quarter got me thinking what US Mint coins with errors since 2000 were popular and will have "staying power," i.e., will be popular for years to come. What do you think? How about an image of that clashed quarter?
I'm not much of an error coin collector - I go for the complete series of all modern coins.

When these clashed Edith quarters became known there were a bunch sold on ebay. They have letter transfer by Washington's ear. I bought one for $10, don't know if that's a good deal or too much but I wanted one. Here it is, clashed on both sides. Next is pic of a more significant clash, I assume an early die stage showing clash in front of Washington's face. I bid on it but lost, it went for about $65 or something like that. Also is overlay and close up pics someone else made. Sorry I don't know much about modern error coins but I own a few. I have a 2015 Nebraska quarter doubled die reverse because that's where I'm from. I don't think most modern error coins will appreciate in value a lot, not as much as older classic coins have/will IMO.

Cuds always seem to hold up over time. The only question, is will the zincoln coin hold up?

I would think the 2000-P Sacagawea wounded eagle and Cheerios would continue to hold up, 24 years later and still sought after.

The 2005-D Speared Bison Jefferson nickel might have some staying power. Same with the 2000-P Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar. The concept seemed to cause some excitement that might endure for a long time. Decades? Maybe not.

Yeah, some modern error coins will likely increase in value in the future, major errors, popular ones.

It seems that really impressive error coins hold their value well. Die variety coins can hold their value well too, if the amount minted stays on the low side. It just depends on the chance that LOTS of them exist, but they just haven't been found.
Learning in 2012 that the Cherrios Dollar I had stashed away in 2000 was possibly worth thousands was the most amazing day of my numismatic life! I was able to verify that it was the 'FS-902 Prototype of 1999' by checking for the die marks near the date. My coin can be seen on the PCGS Coinfacts page for the Cherrios Dollar by clicking 'Veiw More Images' and scrolling down to the third MS-67 coin. It's cert # 37217371.
I had placed it in a drawer, still in the Cherrios packaging, and forgot about it. My thinking was that MAYBE it would be worth $100 or so some day because it was a Cherrios collectable AND a unique mint promotional item as well.
It was certified by PCGS as MS-67 in 2019 and sold by Heritage Auctions. It has gone up in value since it was sold, but I'm still happy that it went for $4200 (not bad for a cereal prize!) The last MS-67 FS-902 sold on Heritage went for $5760.

Congrats on the Cheerios coin, scores like that don't happen often.

2000 Sacagawea Mule.... https://www.pcgs.com/top100/coin6 . If I remember correctly a CC member found one, posted it & auctioned it off. Would love to find one of those.

LOL! I just caught that I misspelled 'Cheerios' as 'Cherrios' in my post. Dyslexia at its finest. Now I just have to figure out why my dictionary on Windows has the spelling both ways.
