What cross-country road trip would be complete without popping into a few pawn shops and thrift stores? Picked this up for $10 - in Acetone now as there are faint signs of the RPD. Need to validate, also hoping the luster pops a bit more post Acetone. It is not as dull in hand but nevertheless, not the best looker.

Acetone might take off the crud but will not bring out any luster. This one is a nice brown EF-45.

I'll say EF, maybe low AU.

Post after photos please. If it turns out to be an RPD, maybe Verdi Care needs to be used? John1

the way it sits right now the coin would most likely not grade straight. for a higher AU coin the original surfaces seem to be missing which imo means it was cleaned at some point to try and clean it up. AU details ( PMD) would like to see it after acetone. verdicare is probably going to get the best results. there are a couple areas that may show some corrosion after like the 9 in the date, a couple letters in AMERICA and some areas on the reverse especially the shield. the coin was most likely improperly stored for quite a while.. theres always a risk in doing anything.

Panzaldi, was thinking along those same lines!!! I'm guessing it had some PVC residue from an old holder that was removed. Just checked on it and the luster is starting to come thru a bit from Acetone.
IGE - I generally agree with you on Acetone/Luster comment but this specimen appears to have some type of film causing the dullness. My guess is an improper rinse post PVC removal left the haze. I might jump over to VC today, see where it takes me.

Virtually 4 diamonds, so I'll say AU-53 sharpness, agree start with VC.

well the good news is there isn't any corrosion in some of the areas I was concerned. definitely would not grade straight but maybe set it on a window sill for a couple years
