I found this metal detecting and did not clean it yet. was hoping for some suggestions on how to clean it safely. What you see is how it came out the ground!

Very confused on how it would have been cleaned it was under ground for the past 100 years and I dug it up amd it looked like that . A lot of that would come off without and water but I don't want to rub it

i have to agree that the coin was cleaned. not harsh but it was cleaned and if it was underground theres no way it wasnt. I don't think the coin would grade straight. it would details for either a cleaning or PMD. the faded staining is dead giveaway

i do think its a low end VF coin though

I think it is VF.

And I'll back you up grospoisson, I don't think it is cleaned either. That said, I also agree with what others are implying - a TPG will likely tag it details-cleaned.

I have had a Barber come out of a MD dig with a similar appearance. It is totally dependent on soil type, aeration, etc. Blackened without a lick of attached dirt/build-up. Even have a video to prove it.

(edit add)
Just saw you asking for recommendations on restoring. I don't think you would need much more than a short cycle of VC for it. Check out my blog post on restoring ground finds if interested - https://www.prodetecting.com/blog/c...-alkali-wash

Definitely cleaned. VF20 details. Also has some heavier obverse scratches.

Nice find! Congratulations!
Do not try to make it look clean and shiny.
Leave it as is or a short soak in verdecare.

But without a doubt cleaned.

VF25 for me as well. It "looks" cleaned but that doesn't mean it was, just depends on how a TPG sees it. Might get ED instead.
