It appears to be just some PMD. Keep looking as there are goodies still to be found.

Whatever dented the rim also "smeared" the second 5. PMD.

Your penny took a hit that banged in the rim. The 5's look was made by what is called Die Deterioration. This is also common. You can look up that term at error-ref.com I want to help you so you don't waste a lot of your time. Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage, useless Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, or minor insignificant imperfections (etc.). Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like. A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins. :)

Quote:The 5's look was made by what is called Die Deterioration. It's called the "Poor Man's Doubled Die" as it's not a true DDO but caused from a worn die. Your Wheat cent is probably worth just a few cents.

Die Deterioration and PMD. As far as grade goes, maybe Fine to VF. Only worth a few cents in this condition.
Errers and Varietys.

Flip954, The so called no mint means it was minted at the Philly mint. Buy yourself a Red Book,it does not need to be the new one. Read it for the info not the values. You need to learn the minting process, so you know the difference between an error, variety and PMD.It will save you a lot of frustration. John1

just to add some info to your knowledge base the chances you will find any coin of value in circulation is almost zero. there are some varieties like the 70S Cents that are out there but you need to know what you are looking for, without knowing those varieties you probably are going to just skip right over them, i suggest that if you want continue your quest go through the photograde value list where they list the varieties. if you click on the variety they will give you photos of what it looks like. Earle42 also posted some sites to look at https://www.pcgs.com/prices/detail/.../most-active
