Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what is going on with this dime. The raised area on the face goes covers that whole area. The strip to the left is raised on both sides. I know it is dirty but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stains from environmental damage. PMD. Could of been in a cup holder at one time.

I agree with Errers and Varietys. A pure acetone soak may remove it.

I had soaked it in acetone for 15min, what would be a good amount of time to try.

There might be glue on the surface creating that raised area. Use pure acetone to speak in and see if it come off

I've soaked coins in acetone for up to two full days, with success (if the targeted gunk was soluble...).

What does the reverse look like?

An accurate weight to two decimal places would be good to know.

I once left a coin in for two months (glass jar with top to prevent evaporation) to verify, and be able to tell others, it does not harm the coin.

If acetone does not work then xylene most likely will. Xylene also cannot physically or chemically interact with the coins metal.

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions I will try to let it soak for a good amount of time. I will update with weights after that. Should I make a new thread or just respond to this post.

It may be a substance that acetone won't dissolve. The thing that bothers me is near the rim at about 1 o'clock, there appears the be part of a letter that is correctly oriented. I don't know what to make of it. Maybe better minds will prevail.

Nevermind. Full obverse vs. the closeup shows that the part letter is an illusion.

I will try to get better pics but the lines appear to be cracks so I don't see how it would be a substance on it. The strip that is a half circle is depressed and not raised I am unable to tell about the area on the face of the portrait.

Might have been an acidic substance that ate away at the clad layer a bit. PMD not a mint error.
