Greetings, This is my first post but was having trouble locating a similar thread. I have a beautiful (to me) ungraded Morgan 1897-o. It has a major blemish, a gash that has distorted the G in "God" on the reverse. Is there any Value to a coin like this above melt or is it one of those keep it because I like it coins? Would also like to confirm that if this was graded it would be sent back as damaged. Thank you,

Thank you, I have always had interest in numismatics but recently inherited small collections from both sides of my family. Would this particular 1897-o be of any additional value over melt or does the PMD ruin the entire value?

Hey Welcome! I understand what you're asking but I have never had a coin graded in my collection. To me, all coins are "one of those keep it because I like it coins." :) I don't send coins to get slabbed because ... I think slabbed coins take the fun out of the hunt. I don't want to just "go buy MS-63 blah-blah" coin. I want to dig through the silver stacker guy's collection of halfs and dollars every couple of months, or find that one weird guy on Craigslist or Marketplace, and make my own finds. Do what sounds like fun to you, though. I'm a firm believer in that.

I'm no expert in Morgans, but it seems no one has addressed your question so I'll give a shot. First, we look up value for a 97-O and observe that indeed it commands a higher price than the most common dates. https://www.pcgs.com/prices/detail/...5-60/ms?pn=3Not hugely more, but definitely would be wanted by someone trying to complete a set. Here are some sold values for the same date, see how yours compares. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nk...H_Complete=1Then the question becomes would it straight grade, and if so what grade would it get. Looks maybe mid-AU to me, but probably AU-Details for the scratch, plus who knows about cleaning or something. Can we get better pics and closeups?

Thank you for the responses. I do not have an electric magnifier I have a 10x with a light and do not see any scratches that would show evidence of cleaning. Is there anything else I should be looking out for other than that? This was fun I will be starting a new thread with an interesting 1924-s Peace dollar soon.

I think the books helped. It is one of my few morgans that still has traces of some rainbow luster (reverse). If anyone could help ID the VAM that would be appreciated. I had to resize the picture to upload, I hope it is better quality.

much better image - thanks. This coin is in pretty good shape (ignoring the gash on the motto) - but that gash just may -'Details' your coin if you get it graded.

IDK I have yet to identify a VAM. I can tell which VAMs it is not. I haven't ruled out 7, 18 or 19. I will have to get it back under the scope. Does the ear look a bit doubled or is that the image or a hit to the ear?

Quote: I can tell which VAMs it is not I have the same problem with VAMS - I guess we need to know what is 'normal' on them then search out all the differences..
