I've been waiting to buy one of these for over a year. I was expecting to purchase an XF common date at some point, but since prices for these have dropped, I decided to purchase one that is full AU. This one resides in a problem free ANACS AU-55 holder. Now its definitely not the best AU-55 out there, but the look and toning pattern of this one grew on me as I contemplated purchasing. I felt connected to it. My type set mostly consists of toned coins, and I have several crusty toned gold coins that bring me great joy. This one should fit in just fine with the burnt orange characteristics. It doesn't look to have a ton of luster, but enough to generate a nice cartwheel. The strike seems above average in comparison to the dozens of AU 1854 $3 gold coins I've looked at on Heritage. This is the second to last coin I need to complete my version of the "gold" type set. I just need the type 2 dollar.

Thanks guys. It was in the $1,300 range, which is actually the most I've spent on a coin to date...:-P

I haven't gotten that high yet...most was $1,100.

Pretty sweet for $1,300 IMO.

I agree, nice coin and a pretty solid deal. I've priced slabbed AU-58 examples of this date recently and they go for close to $2,000. For $1300 I think you did well.

Say Johnny, didn't you pick up a counterfeit $3 coin awhile back and were wrestling with the seller about it? Whatever happened with that situation (or am I mis-remembering the deal)?
Rest in Peace

Thanks! Yes, you are correct. I purchased a counterfeit 1855 $3 gold coin a little over a year ago. I was never able to be refunded due to the fact that I removed the coin from the bezel. It was a painful experience for me, but it brought me to the forums and pushed me to gain more in depth knowlege of this hobby. I honestly don't regret it. I ended up selling it as a counterfeit for melt to someone who collects counterfeits and gives seminars regarding Counterfeit Detection. Hopefully some good will come of it.

I like it! I don't think the toning takes awat from the coin. I have many toned coins in my collection, I think they add character. I have not hit $1,300 yet...came close $1,275.

Some more updated pictures of the coin in hand. It has the most alluring orange/peach tone.

Aye, she's a beauty. Now you just have to get that plastic off her so she can breathe air again!

thanks! You know, normally I'm the first one to crack a coin out and put it in my album. However, the fact that my DANSCO 7070 has no hole for this coin and the fact that this type is highly counterfeited, I've decided to leave it in the slab. I still have managed to keep it in my album though, stuck to the back cover with removable velcro. :-) Here's the updated gold page:

Sure, no reason to crack it if it's not going to go in an album.
