I love the off-center strike. That's truly epic.

I think you may have the answer, jacrispies. File marks by "ES" in STATES match up as does the slightly rotated die clash. Similar weak center strike. Start of the curve under the 6 very similar. No dot to the right of the 5, but I'm buying your theory. I'm convinced that these two coins were struck by the same die, mine later than yours. Thanks

The crack starting at the U in UNITED matches as well. Would be fun to search around for even later die state examples, perhaps the Cud is fully formed.

They had a good many problems with dies breaking in 1865 apparently - my other 3c. A bit off center as well.

Coin arrived today. Just an interesting piece that I couldn't pass up for $43. I can't get any feel for a grade since the strike is so bad. I'm thinking probably an old obverse cleaning. Reverse looks to have some luster remaining. What a bizarre Cud!

Agreed, but it's still a super neat coin, and you paid more than a fair price for it.

there is some crazy stuff happening with this coin. new photos are better. the coin may have been wiped at some point (jacrispies comment on details) tough call on AU or MS like I stated before and even with the new photos I can't get a good handle it. this is one you'll need to assess in hand. a couple grades are possible

AU details (cleaned)
AU55
UNC details (cleaned)
MS62
