I'm looking to fill the 21-D slot. The set is EF-AU but the keys will be in lower grades. 16D will be only AG03. I came across these 2 but unable to make up my mind. To me, they both look the same eventhough the grades are different. Would like your opinion before making a decision. The first one is raw VG10 dealer grade at $139 The second is NGC F12 at $189 Thank you.

Details-wise, the two coins are almost twins. The main difference I see is that the VG10 has a couple minor gouges on the rim by LIB, a light scratch by IGWT, and a few scattered light scratches by EPU. Perhaps the dealer is a conservative grader and netted the grade down a bit due to the marks. But honestly, on a coin the size of a dime those marks are pretty small. For a $50 difference, I would be very tempted to take the raw coin.

I like them both, so I would go with the lesser priced (raw) coin.

Do you think the rim area near 'I' will be considered damage? Usually they say graders look at the rim first and its a plus to have clear rims.

If you bought the raw one, are you going to have it graded?
If so, then I would probably just go ahead with the slabbed one. No surprises waiting for you and the price difference may be what you would have to invest in the grading (fees, shipping, insurance).
If you are going to put it in an album, then the rim marks might be less noticeable.

my only concern with the VG10 is the dings on the rim. Since you are trying to fill a slot in an album the slab is irrelevent however the slabbed coin is cleaner (no really noticable nics). If you are on a budget go for the lower priced coin.

Its going into the album. But incase down the road if I want to sell or updrage then I do not want to loose out. Even if I buy the certified I might be breaking it out to place it in the album.
I want a good looking coin:)

Quote: I want a good looking coin:) They both look good to me, and $50 is still $50! The rim ding is there, but in my opinion it does not take away from the overall appearance like some hits can.

I just got off the phone with them. She said it comes down to whether I want a raw or slabbed coin. Reason for the lower grade is the mark between L & I, bump above I and the slabbed one has little bit more detail than the raw one. As for eye appeal, they're both similar and similar color. Also said the mark is not very visible.

The rim on the raw is kinda weak between the I->B Is it that light in hand? If so, I would pick the other IMHO.

A certain amount of dings, nicks, and scratches are allowed on grades below VF because that is what happens to a coin that has spent significant time in circulation, I do not think anything on that coin would cause it to be BB'd. It really comes down to a matter of personal preference- those marks would not bother me on a Fine coin but I certainly would not want to see them on an EF/AU coin. If they bother you at all, then the choice is simple- go with the slab. If they do not bother you, then you just added $50 to your 16-D budget

OK, so far I'm more towards the raw but one last observation. On the reverse, the green color near the star between AMERICA & DIME, is that verdigris? I see tiny bits of green on 2 other spots as well. What are your thoughts?

I like the idea of saving money just as much as the next person. I think if it was me I would go with the slabbed coin. It's already been graded and if you are thinking of upgrading down the road you might make a few dollars on it.

I see the green spot but can't tell whether it might be a bit of PVC residue or just some random discoloration. My vote would be for the slabbed coin; for the extra money you get an assurance of problem-free status and an easier sell if you want to upgrade some day. The NGC coin does appear to have stronger rims which is important for circulated Mercury dimes.
