Hello all

I am from Australia and was recently given some old US coins including this 1928 dollar.

There is an 'S' mint mark just under the 'ONE'. It appears to be in excellent condition with very slight wear.

I don't know anything about US coins so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Simon

That is a Peace dollar, minted from 1921-28 and then 1934-35. It was the last 90% silver dollar minted for circulation, containing 0.77344 oz ASW. The 1928-S had a mintage of 1,632,000 and the grade is probably EF-AU. Numismedia lists EF40 @$36 and AU50 @$52. As you approach the MS grades, the value rapidly increases with an MS60 value of $150 and an MS63 value of $538 which means that the coin is a conditional rarity in MS grades.

As an aside, if that pesky mint mark was not present then you would have a key date of the Peace dollar series and a coin worth $4-500

Although not a "key" date the 1928-S is fairly scarce and this looks like a nice, original example. I'd say you received a handsome gift!

What else was included along with this Peace dollar?

Cheers for that info. Very helpful. I will have a few more US coins to ask about as I get time to scan them.
