Hi Everyone.

I'm going through my dad's coins he collected. I ran across this one and I have looked at several others to compare but there seem to be so many errors or maybe it was made on a nickle (weight is only 5 oz)? So, I got some pictures and would like to hear your insights into what I may be looking at.

Thanks everyone for any advise.

@mel, first welcome to CCF. Second, to me this looks like a heavily circulated and mechanically damaged quarter rather than a mint error. Can you please confirm the units on the weight also? Thx.

Well we will need much better images - this one is too washed out to see details. Also - I hope it don't weigh 5 oz - I'm sure you mean grams. which is close to normal (.07g light) but that is within tolerances.
But from what I can see, I'll have to agree with Spence.

Isn't quarter weight 5.67 grams? Tolerance is .19 so technically it's .48 grams light.

Okay guys, first off, thanks for the welcome! And secondly, I'm laughing at how silly I sound with the weight info I gave!
Yes, it's "grams" not Oz and it is 5 grams right on the money. I took a few more pictures for you. I hope that helps.

1. It's called a Washington quarter. Some coins are named by various parts of the design, but most US coins are called by the portrait. Except when they aren't - you just have to learn it

Lincoln Cent
Lincoln Shield cent, Lincoln Memorial cent, and the Lincoln Wheat cent (called a Wheat cent or Wheatie), And in 2009 there are four designs for the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

Jefferson nickel, also called just a nickel. Before 1938 it was the Buffalo nickel (yes, technically the animal is a Bison)
Before that was the "V" nickel also called the Liberty V nickel.
Before that the Shield nickel
Before that the Half Dime

Roosevelt dime (also a Roosie)
Before FDR it was the Mercury dime (technically the winged head of liberty, but it looked so much like Mercury the symbol of Florist's Telegraph Delivery (FTD) in use at the same time that it stuck - collectors are an ornery bunch)

Washington quarter
the current Notable Women Quarters are mostly referred to by the honoree - Sally Ride, Maya Angalou.
before that were the America the Beautiful Quarters - generally referred to by the reverse image, i.e. Yellowstone
before that the Fifty State Quarters - usually the state name.
before that the regular Washington quarters (back to 1932) except for 1976 which are the bi-centennial design

Just a heavily circulated quarter. It's had a rough life.
