Here: http://crdievarieties.com/doku.php?id=awqstudyI saw today that VarietyVista listed two nice 2023-2024 quarter doubled dies recently, so I figured now's a good time to finish up what I had of a rough study I was doing on the new American Women Quarters. If you've seen Ribar's nickel doubled die listings for 2023 (all 142 of them!) you'd have noticed there was an explosion in the number of doubled dies after 2022. I don't think anyone has noticed it yet, but that explosion isn't isolated to nickels... I was finding a large number of unusual quarter doubled dies last year and worked on making a little guide on what I was seeing on these. With how common some of these minor doubled dies seem to be, and with the number of likely doubled working hubs I was finding, I wanted to put this information out there to work out what really is and isn't a doubled die. I don't believe I can source enough quarters to be especially thorough myself (my bank won't let me get anymore boxes of quarter lol), so I'd like to know if what I'm seeing is consistent with what everyone else is. Keep an eye out on these new quarters, there's some really nice DDs out there! -Tanner Scott

Thanks for this, I have a hard time motivating myself to look at these quarters for doubled dies since the designs vary so greatly.

Thanks Tanman For this - great info. But can I ask a question about that first image you posted up above? That first 2 in the date appears more step like and reduced in size (compared to the second 2 in the image) Wouldn't this be MD? Or am I missing something here?

It only looks that way because of the shadows and how slight it is. It does not look like Machine Doubling in hand. I'll admit that one is probably not the best example to use, it's just the best one I've found myself. The one they recently listed on VV is much better of an example: http://www.varietyvista.com/09f%20W...PMDDO001.htmAlso. this doubling on the first 2 is very common on the 2022-P quarters. With how many coins I found with identical doubling, I ruled out Machine Doubling pretty quick. For 2022, it seems that there's a doubled master die that looks like this.

That is a superb analysis! I hadn't realized that the profusion of 2023 doubling extended to all denominations. I had been trying to get a handle on the 2023 nickel catalog, but I finally just started banking those nickels for later examination. The 2006-2022 DDRs are all easy to spot, so they can be examined rapidly. The 2023 nickels can have doubling anywhere on the reverse and most places on the obverse. Much of it presents like DDD, so you have to go through every coin with a fine toothed comb comparing to 100+ WDDR listings. Also, there are so many that you might be seeing a new one. Are there any clues as to what is producing all the doubling? Most of it is not in the typical central position for a Class 9 jolted double.

Quote: Are there any clues as to what is producing all the doubling? I'm not at all certain, but I have some guesses on that page there. I found a mint report that noted they are experimenting with changing the curvature of the dies. This experimentation, notably, started with the cents and nickels, but the reported timeline doesn't match up too well with what we are seeing with the doubled dies.
