Many of you know that I really enjoy estate auction and attend often. One of the things I cannot resist are grab bags, cans full of cents, anything that has an air of treasure hunt with it. Generally, I lose money on them but justify it by adding value for the enjoyment I get while going thru them. About a week ago, I went to one and bought three bags of coins. They were in one gallon zip lock bags about a third full. Then, they wrapped the top two thirds around the coins and taped them shut. You could not see into the bag with all the wraps of plastic and then being tightly taped. You could look in the end of the wrap and see some wheats and an occasional silver colored coin thru the plastic showed. Anyway, I bought all three for $87.00. The following pics show some of the results. Agony: Image: IMG_0009.jpg58.58 KB The Large cent on the left is a 1807 Image: IMG_0010.jpg83.4 KB Ecstasy: Image: IMG_0009-2.jpg53.68 KB Image: IMG_0004.jpg73.25 KB Image: IMG_0003.jpg89.3 KB Image: IMG_0001.jpg85.86 KB Image: IMG_0001-2.jpg92.87 KB Imagine my surprise to find these two. Image: IMG_0003-2.jpg43.64 KB One of the 1909s is a VDB Image: IMG_0002.jpg60.4 KB The Trime is a 186 (?) can't read the last number in the date Image: IMG_0001-3.jpg57.09 KB Some of the run of the mill things: Image: IMG_0004-2.jpg53.22 KB There were a large pile of Lincoln Memorials and a smaller pile of Wheats. Have not gotten these under the scope yet. The auctioneer stated at the beginning that they had not gone thru the bags, I believe him. I have learned these small time auction houses don't understand coins. They count on the collectors to ID important coins and bid accordingly. The grab bags are generally the unimportant coins to the original owner and they just don't mess with them. There can be buys as this proves. Anyway, wanted to share the fun and AAAAaaaaaa the pain. Coinhunter, these auctions where they have them on the estate property and quite often sell the home too is where I have found my best buys. I love em.
Pod., I have not even started trying to figure out what they are worth. The biggest problem I have is finding out how much a coin with a big hole in it is worth. Are they scrap or can they be sold with collectors value? I have no idea.

The Twenty Cent Piece was the real shock, though the Carson City Quarter wasn't bad, either. Jim

How do you find these auctions? Do they advertise in the paper or do you find them in some other way? They sound interesting!

Ken, I have researched auctioneers in the phone books and have gotten on their mailing lists. They also advertise in the classified section of the Friday paper. They all have websites and post their up-coming auctions. Once you have found them, they will keep you updated.

The 20C alone paid for that lot. The 1877-CC Quarter is a shame for that gouge on the face; it's easily AU55-58 and a $500+ coin without the damage. Agony and ecstasy, indeed.

Wow. I think that lot was deffinately worth $87.00... It is always fun to hunt for treasures, which makes grab bags fun, plus they often go for a lower price than ID coins. As yhou said sometimes they pay off, sometimes you wish they would have. It's all in good fun

Well worth the $87.00 you paid. I'm going to have to go to more estate auctions around here.

I went to a giant yard sale last year - 250 or more houses, but no one was selling coins :(
