Please tell us what you are seeing that makes you question this coin. By the way it is a large date.

to the CCF

Photo overload. Tell us what you are seeing that is of interest. Showing all those detail photos does nothing for me.

1960 LD. according to PCGS they do not list any type of variety for this year. the slight shifting is what is called Machine Doubling. Mechanical Doubling is also known as Strike Doubling and occurs during the striking process when the opposing dies are loose and twist or shift slighty while the coin is still in the press mostly due to die aging. This causes some of the devices (often seen in lettering) to push slightly, creating shelf-like projections or shadows of the letters. it does not add anything to the coin.

I would like to thank each member for your response.

I am new here in this forum and appreciate the learning points provided by the experts, in lieu of my limited knowledge in this field.

My questions would be;

1. What type of zero is on this coin? Big, small, small over large, small under large, large on large, large on small, small on small, just small, extra thickness zero, etc..?

Thank you for your response. (So, it is a large date)

2. Is that doubling or a small chip under the inside of the top of the first 9?

I see two small curves that come to a point but am unsure. I looked through Coppercoins and Wexler's but none similar. (but some close)

3. Do you see doubling IGWT, a spread to the North (particularly in the letters I and N) or Machine Doubling? Maybe a combination?

I see a spread to the North IGWT, not sure about doubling although you can clearly see a notch in the corner of practically every letter and they appear to have an extra thickness to them, but it is hard to see any doubling.

4. Is there doubling on the letters R, T, B and Y on the word liberty?

I see doubling on the R, possible doubling on the T and B (very small). but I am unsure about the Y. When I look closely in the lower center of the R, I see doubling. At first glimpse it looks like a chip. But I am unsure due to my inexperience. I cannot find an example of this type of chip, on this year coin, under the letter R in the word liberty anywhere.

5. Is there doubling above the earlobe?

I see minor doubling inside the ear, above the lobe to the east.

6. Does this coin look like it has extra thickness on the head, particularly on the ear, to the west of the eye lid, the entire length of the nose and possibly the forehead?

I am unsure what I am see in regard to question number six.

So, those would have been a detailed list of what I see, or do not see and my questions. Again, I am new in this field and this is only my second topic.

I appreciate each and every one of you that dedicate your time and post helping others. I find you amazing, and you- "The Bedrock of the Community" are why I am here and the topics you have posted or replied to sparked an interest in me several weeks ago. Thank you!

A few last questions for now. :)

1. This coin looks like a new coin, but in my photos the color is way off. Any suggestions?

2. Where do I go to ask a generalized question and not a full topic?

Thanks again,
Respectfully

I see Die Deterioration Doubling. As far as grading goes, maybe AU to MS.

Looks to have seen light circulation, AU-55/58 at best. Normal coin, no variety, no errors, worth 1 cent.

You obviously want to learn and are having fun. So how about the best tip I could possibly give you?

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage, useless Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, or minor insignificant imperfections (etc.). So learn what it is you need to be looking for by comparing your coins to known errors instead.

A good way to start is, for instance, to get a box of pennies form the bank. Separate them by date and mint mark. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.

Thank you for the great advice. Exactly what I needed to hear. I read pages of information to come back to the same place on these small cents.

I appreciate your time and sharing of knowledge. Much respect. After I post a new question, I prepared before reading this, I am headed to variety vista with my next coin.

Thanks again

Can anyone tell me why two of my original photos in this topic have been replaced with 2 photos from a later topic please?
Is that normal? These are two different coins, now combined but not by me? These two were originally here, and replaced by the first two at the top of the page?

You need to pay attention to file names for your photos. If you use the same file name the newer posted photo will overwrite the prior photo(s).

I suspect this is what happened here - you reused the file name on the photos. Be sure each photo you post has a unique file name and this will not happen.

large dates can be discerned by small date by looking at the 6. the top of the 6 will be short and stubby compared to this one

anything on this coin that looks like doubling is common Machine Doubling due to die aging allowing the die to shift between strikes. this is different than a double die where the doubling is actually on the die

taking photos of coins is not easy to capture what the coin looks like in hand. in most cases individuals here have seen enough coins to be able to discern that. if they cant, they will let you know that better photos are needed. typically it comes down to lighting which can cause glare and obscure the surfaces.

Thank you all for the great insight, information and for your experience. I think I have learned a lot from these responses and will be sure your time was not in vain for sharing, by putting it to good use.

So, I figured it about after nickelsearcher's reply in regard to the added photos from another topic to this topic.

So, although I have each of these coins in different folders on my computer, in each folder they are coin's 1 and 2. Although they will not overwrite on my computer because they are in different folders, here they will over wright. Makes sense- duh.

Nickelsearcher- in an earlier reply you asked, "what does this mean"? In regard to my comment on the title, "I can handle it". I meant, I am ready to learn, and will take all the advice and constructive criticism with a grain of salt. :)

Thanks again, I would have been in outer space without everyone here.

I have a specific naming convention for my coin photos so they do not duplicate. If you don't organize, you life will be difficult. Example for a Lincoln Cent:

OBVERSE

1959Dlincoln_27MAY2024

REVERSE

1959DlincolnREV_27MAY2024

ADDITIONAL SHOTS

1959Dlincoln2_27MAY2024 (I know it's a second obverse shot by the name)

1959DlincolnREV2_27MAY2024 (again easy to see what it is by the name, a second shot of the reverse)

If I have multiple 1959D's, I add an upper case B like this:

1959DlincolnB_27MAY2024
1959DlincolnB2_27MAY2024
1959DlincolnBrev_27MAY2024
1959DlincolnBrev2_27MAY2024

This system is bullet proof for finding files too. If I want to see all the 1959D's I have, I just search 1959D in windows explorer. I also NEVER have a duplicate file name.
