Buffalo nickel die wear vs. circulation wear.
welcome to the club. you need to read fortcollins response to the recent 26S.
i think the 37's don't have as many issues as some of the other earlier dates. mismatched dies, strike issues, die polishing etc. good luck trying to understand this series. I don't even attempt to guess what a
TPG would grade these in most cases and would not buy raw any that have decent value.
the only way to even come close on these is throw photograde out. look at specific areas of the coin in order to determine strike. I don't even know if this is the correct approach but the areas I use are the sharpness of the ends of the feathers where they cross. the hair on the top of the head. the hair clasp. the sharpness of the lettering and date. I was always taught if you just look at the horn and tail to grade these, forget it. one can guess a grade range but what a
TPG would assign is another matter all together.
I'm mid AU at AU55
fortcollins is our resident expert on these but he was off site for quite a while so seeing him on the 26S I'm hoping he is back even for just a few comments. maybe he will chime in and beat me up which is ok. its the only way to learn about these.
i do suggest undergrading them if you are going to purchase raw to be on the safer side.
