Hello Coin Family, I have here a 1935 Lincoln Cent with what appears (so far) to be an unknown error in the date under the '5'. Hoping someone has seen this before, or a similar error, and can help explain just what the heck are we looking at here? Tried to get a few pics at different lighting angles, hope it helps. Appears to me to be a '5' on top of something else? A '0' or a '6'? Really makes no sense, so I hand it over to you Jedis.

I am only taking a guess but it looks like it may have taken a hit with some circulation flattening?

Looks like circulation flattening or maybe Die Deterioration Doubling.

What helps when diagnosing something like this is knowing the process dies go through to be made.

How coin dies are made/used:
https://www.coinnews.net/2014/01/06...oduce-coins/

It would be impossible for it to be over a 6 or a zero b/c the master hub and die for this year, used to make every die used to mint coins that year, did not have a 0 or a 6 on them that was covered by a 5. otherwise every single 1935 penny would have these exact markings.

Thus, we are left with an impossible situation. So no matter what our eyes tell us, we have to conclude this is post mint damage (or Die Deterioration etc.) and Pareidolia. It also makes sense that with all the untold and infinite ways cons get struck in circulation, that there are going to be those, such as this one, where the coincidental damage is going to make us see a pattern.
