That is very cool. You or someone needs to do an overlay to see if it's the same size as the D mintmark used in 1954. If so, it's an important discovery piece!
Edited to add: your photos are good enough that you could do such work yourself, or at least take the basic photos needed for the task and I'd volunteer to do the overlay. Here's what you need:
Photo similar to the one you showed but of a 54-D coin at the same magnification of your 54-S. You should probably take the 54-S photo again to ensure the two photos are at exactly the same magnification. It would be helpful if the 54-D was taken at a similar angle to the 54-S, in other words the D is rotated CCW like it is on the 54-S.
If you want to do the overlay yourself, I can give you pointers so you can do these in the future. If not, just post the images and I or someone else will do them for you.

@Dearborn, rmpsrpms, ijn1944 and E&V, most appreciative of your comments, thank you.
@rmpsrpms.... I will attempt to do as suggested, but if unsuccessful, will be requesting the CCF for assistance.

Looks like it to me, but the overlay will be definitive.

I'd be happy to work up an overlay.
Give me a few minutes.

Here's an overlay using a D mint mark from a coin on PCGS Coinfacts. I used only the top portion of the mint mark because the D punched into the die would have been weak. The size and shape seem to be very close. I'm also working up an animation of the possible D mint mark that turns on and off.

Why not use the image provided by the OP? This way you are guaranteed the images are at the same magnification. Proving the 54-D MM and the potential 54-S DMM are the same size is critical to proving the DMM one way or the other.

Wow, that is a truly bizarre place to punch a mint mark! If that is indeed a D, then it would almost have to be intentionally tucked away behind the 5 like that. Great eye to spot that anomaly! =)

There are a couple of 54-S dies with damage to this area of the 5. I'm wondering if one of those just a later die state of this die where the MM has worn such that it looks like damage instead of an underlying D mintmark.
