24.8 and 24.9 g are well below tolerance for a lightly circulated Morgan dollar, so if the scale is accurate, it suggests that your 1878's are not genuine.

Very confusing. Please start by showing us the 1900 coin, right-side up, with the weight.

Welcome to CCF! Coins can have a small variation in weight when minted. Then there is circulation wear which reduces the weight. I have a few heavily circulated Morgan and Peace that weight about 11% less than mint state. Many of my circulated Morgans I have for stacking weigh about 3-6% less than mint state.

I don't know if the capsules you are using came from the same company or they may weigh differently one from another. Just my opinion but I'd take the coins out of the capsules and weigh them raw. A big difference in weight could indicate a lot of wear or a fake. Some of us use a magnet and a thing called the pocket pinger that you listen to the tone sound of a coin which has a specific frequency ring. The wrong tone sound indicates a fake. You can watch people using the pocket pinger on YouTube if you are interested in getting one. It's good to buy coins from well known dealers and sellers who allow returns.

Normal tolerance - 25g may even be legit. Buy "Heavy", sell "Light"

"Not Genuine" needs to be determined by more than just weight - that is close to tolerance.! Pictures of the under weight coins will help - and rotated properly!

I'm thinkinging your Morgans are good to go - probably cleaned/polished down the road but are glazing/patinating over - Eh?

@flo, first welcome to CCF. Second, moving forward, please limit your threads to a single coin. That way we can give each one the attention that it deserves. Thx.

Quite a few coins you're showing there. At least you can probably tell that your scale is reasonably accurate. I assume all the weights you show are net of the tare weight of the capsule?

That's absolutely true, but an incorrect weight is a good place to start. And the two 1878's in the original post looks suspicious anyway.

The 1878 coins have the same look as other copies I've seen for sale. They have the dark toning that looks as if it's been wiped away around the portrait of Liberty.

Here's an image I found of one of these sets.

So someone's selling a $1k worth of Morgan's for $99? On what site are these coins listed? Sounds like someone is getting robbed.
