Hello everyone,

I have a 1974-D Kennedy with a large bubble on the obverse. I'm assuming this is due to overheating, but I am new to this so I'm not certain. Can someone identify this type of error?

Thanks for your input!,
Michelle

I agree with what you said. Looks like it was in a fire or someone intentionally heated it up.

to the CCF!

As noted above, this coin was damaged by exposure to intense heat. It could have been a house fire or maybe in a car that burned, but it's what some numismatist would call a 'Campfire Coin.'

The heat caused the cupronickel layer to melt slightly and separate from the copper core forming the bubble seen on the obverse. This would also explain the black soot deposits seen on the surfaces of both sides.

It's not an error, unfortunately, just Post Mint Damage. PMD

It's safe to spend, or keep it as an interesting oddity.

Heat damage, yes. That half may have been in the till at the location of the now famous Disco Inferno of 1976...
