Here is another interesting coin I got this week from my bank roll of quarters. It's a 1967 Washington quarter that had a great look but shows circulation hits and wear in the higher points of the coin. I really like the strike and wonder if it was cut from an SMS group for the year! I looked at the PCGS pics but because of the detail loss due to the coin being out in circulation I discovered no match. So I thought I would take pics to show a 1967 Quarter I really like, to get opinions of the community. Regards to all.

Thanks Coinfrog. The coin is so nice I stuck it in a 2x2 flip to protect it. Regards!

John1 you got me! I would guess because this coin was in circulation it would be difficult to prove. However there is something about this coin that makes it interesting. Regards.

I don't know if the theory is similar to nickel and half dollar SMS. I don't remember seeing much Die Deterioration on the SMS coins that I examined. But they are otherwise very similar to business strikes. Probably someone like Tanner could give you a much more specific answer.

Doesn't look like a SMS to me. I'll grade it at AU.

from what I understand SMS coin were struck between 1965 and 1967. the difference between a business strike and an SMS coin is that they were struck on higher tonnage presses than business struck coins resulting in an above average strike. as to how to tell the difference I have no idea. maybe comparing it to business strikes for the same year and denomination. my opinion is that the IN in the motto is not fully struck as well as the arrow and tail feathers. there is a considerable amount of flatness in the letters also. if I had to guess i'd say its not SMS

if you say there are signs of circulation its difficult to determine that using these photos so i'll have to take your word on that. obviously it hasnt seen much at all.

Just comparing it to the image catalog on PCGS. None of those SMS quarters have Die Deterioration. The devices are fresh and the fields are flat. The OP quarter has quite a bit of metal rippling on Washington's neck and behind his head, implying that it is a very nice business strike quarter.

Also worth noting: there seems to be a credible theory for Kennedy half dollars that the mint retired used SMS dies into service for business strikes. So it's not impossible that this example was struck with a retired SMS die on the circulation coin production line.
