I had to make a recent trip to the Emergency Room (everyone's fine, thanks for asking!) and was given small dollars in change with each purchase from 3 different vending machines. I wound up with 12 different designs including Susan B. Anthony, Presidential, Innovation and Sacagawea dollars.

My question is does the mint still distribute small dollar coins of each design into circulation? I thought the only way to get Innovation dollars and the like was to purchase them from the US Mint webpage at a premium.

Just curious as to what's circulating out there.

I believe the small dollars have been de facto NCLT for over a decade because the Federal Reserve banks have billions and billions on hand.

When the banks run out and need them, they will order them from the Fed banks. If the Fed were ever to run out, they will order them from the Mint. However, I do not think they are even close to getting there.

So, everything the Mint makes is for annual sets, bags, and rolls. The buyers sort through them—the gems are kept and rejects are put into circulation because it is easier than selling them.

Interesting that you received an SBA dollar!

It's been years but when I asked my bank teller for "any dollar or half dollar coins you may have", after the snide "there's no silver" comments, occasionally I'd get an SBA, so they're out there, but as @jbuck said, the golden/small dollars are far more prevalent these days.

Half dollar and $1 coins are produced as (NCLT) collectibles. However, they may still be ordered by the Federal Reserve for circulation and used as legal tender which has happened with the half dollars for example. https://www.pcgs.com/news/half-doll...lation-again

Despite efforts by the U.S. government to promote their use to save the cost of printing one dollar bills, the Susan B Anthony dollar, the Sacagawea dollar and the Presidential dollar Series are all seldom seen in circulation, since most Americans seem to have preferred to use the dollar bill. For this reason, since December 11, 2011, the Mint has not produced dollar coins for general circulation, and all dollar coins produced after that date have been specifically for collectors. These collector coins can be ordered directly from the Mint, while pre-2012 circulation dollars can be obtained from most U.S. banks or possibly found in circulation as you have Yokozuna. Of course that doesn't stop someone from taking their NCLT dollars and spending them perhaps due to needing money or thinking they will not increase in value, death of a collector etc are a few reasons I can think of. We have of course also seen even proof coins intended for sets in circulation for similar reasons or because they removed certain coins and dumped the rest.

coins (such as the €2 coin, Canadian "toonie" or 5 Swiss francs) have largely succeeded outside the USA because of the removal (or lack) of their corresponding paper issues, whereas the U.S. government has taken no action to remove the $1 bill which as mentioned seems to be preferred over coins here and many prefer digital these days unless there is specific reason to use cash (or the few people who just liked to search them for fun).

Currently they have the american innovations and native american $1 coin program and the Kennedy half dollar. Previously there was the Presidential $1 Coin Program (2007-2016, 2020), Sacagawea Golden Dollar Coin (2000-2008), Susan B. Anthony dollar Coin (1979-1999), Eisenhower dollar (1971-1978)

Good summary datadragon, thanks.

I would only add that there are some who purposely use and hence put in circulation Hal Dollars, dollar coins and 2 $ bills (see threads on CCF).

Yes there are some people who intentionally may buy and then spend and circulate them which I didnt mention as another reason, but thats because there is usually a premium on the collector coins purchase at least and so the number of people who may do this intentionally instead of the other reasons would probably be limited to a few people such as coin collectors and hobbyists. $2 bills still sometimes can be found at the bank and so may not require the premium, but still rarely seen in circulation anymore so another one that some have used.

They buy bags and rolls, sort out the gems for grading/profit, and spend/deposit the "culls" because it is more efficient than trying to sell them.
