Hi. Can someone please explain to me the difference between Die Deterioration and distortion of the devices? All descriptions sound about the same for both. Like, for example, on this photo: which one is it? And how can you tell which is which? Thank you in advance!

@sva, I understand that your question is generic, but can you please tell us the date and mint for this cent? I'd like to get that info into the title as it helps with the CCF search functionality. Thx.

Sure thing. The photo is of a 2018 D cent. I will make sure I always specify which coin I post, even if it's not important to the question.
Sorry, I didn't think about it.

Well with DDD- I find that it is almost every time trending towards the rim all the way around the rim, and can be accompanied with radial flow lines that also trend from the center towards the edge.
with MD that tends to be more shelf like and on raised devices, they are reduced in size (thinner) but on Incuse devices, they appear fatter.

@Dearborn ohhh, device distortion is just another name for Machine Doubling? Never mind then, I thought it's something I'm not familiar with, it was used in rather convoluted context without photos. I've never heard it called that, my English must be worse than I thought. Thank you for taking your time to respond.

Svant, "distortion" is often used to describe class 9 doubled dies. The first pic is a comparison of a normal date on top and a minor doubled die with distortion below it.

Here is another doubled die with more extreme distortion.
