I recently put an ad in on Craislist offering to buy coins from people. Today I got someone who wants to sell me:
1877 Morgan. According to Numismedia, non-existant. 1884 Trade. Minted as proof only, $180k coin 1885 Trade. Minted as proof only, numismedia does not list a price 1836 Seated$. Proof only, min numismedia $3,700 1838 Seated$. Proof only, min numismedia $36k
He also has some common date morgans and some mid range morgans.
I hope that this is a scammer rather then some poor sap who got taken to the cleaners.

If it's too good to be true...
If it IS true I'd only offer to meet the person in a public place like a bank where money could be handled immediatly and then deposited.
Craigslist is Evil I tells ya! Tryin to build up a nice vinyl collection and I have bought 2000 pieces in 2 weeks

Offer them the flea market price--it would be interesting to have those for reference for a $1 ea.

No way no how does someone on Craigslist have genuine examples of those coins. The 1884 TD had a mintage of 10(Heritage has handled three) and the 1885 TD has a mintage of 5(Heritage has never auctioned an 1885).

My main question is whether or not it would be a bad idea to buy some of the low value morgans he has, knowing that he is trying to sell at least a few fakes, either intentionally or not.

Careful, I've got over 10,000 LPs of various genre. Have you ever mover a large record collection? It took over five pick up loads! (I put it in storage and have moved three times since then)

you all do know they make silver things called disc's now that have music on them don't ya? You can also burn them yourself and put all different kinds of music on them and just pop it in and let it play for hours, you can also record a voice on them so they think its live when its really memorex. Oh yeah, it usually doesn't have all the popping the LP's have when playing so they have better sound quality. Time to move into the 20th Century fellers and leave those 19th century devices for the museum

Hey just because you had to crank the first music player that you ever owned doesn't mean you need to bash our love of things old and obsolete.

You obviously miss the fun of searching stores all over the world in person and on the internet for a phonograph needle. You don't have the fun of finding a pile of records that just fell off a shelf. You don't know how much fun it is to try lifting all those old records when your old. And mostly you probably don't know about finding tubes for those old machines. Of course the look on a face when someone takes the arm off while a record is playing and drag it accross the record. GEE those were the good old days.

Not to mention,
Nice, large, complete artwork!
That's missing off of the shinny, little silver discs!

Gee, we haven't deviated too much from the original topic.....
I still think my Linn Sondek turntable provides higher fidelity sound from many LP records than I can get from a CD. I appreciate the CD convenience but for optimum sound quality I usually go for the vinyl.
By the way, well-maintained, clean LPs played on a good turntable will not have excessive snap, crackle, and pop problems.

Quote: Time to move into the 20th Century fellers and leave those 19th century devices for the museum I have not bought one of those "shiny silver disks" in several years now. I download all of my music. Legally and DRM free. Time to move into the 21st century!
