I purchased two 1999 Silver Proof Sets when they came out. I remember looking at their value in the secondary market the following year. $200! Hung onto them rather than sell. The 2025 Red Book has them at $100 while Numismedia has the FMV at $69. Two queries: 1) Why the tremendous drop over the years? 2) Why did the value skyrocket in the first place? Was it because it was the first year of the State Quarters? TIA.

I think you answered your own question. There was a tremendous surge in interest when the State Quarters first came out, followed by years of "market saturation." Well, at least they still have the their silver bullion value, which for the 5 quarters alone is currently near $26.

Never use Red Book as a price guide, they are always too high. Also outdated almost immediately. John1

I've stopped buying the silver proof sets from the US Mint. I've found that if you wait a couple years you can get them for half of the original price.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

for the 1999 Silver proof sets, there was great anticipation for these 'new' quarters, so demand was high, once the demand wore off the prices dropped. (as they always do) , but they may go back up after a while, maybe not as high as $200 though. When the 1996 W Proof ASE came out only in the Full set with all that gold, a graded PR70 (one of the very first ones to get graded at 70) sold to somebody for just over $70,000 if I remember correctly. Now that there are more and more of them grading at 70, the price dropped like a stone. The demand is still there for the ASE, but now so is the availability also.
