Nice run of those horngroschen!

I recently picked up a Florence grosso dateable to 1467, somewhat uncommon date for those, and will look forward to playing in it in the 8th edition of How Far Back.

Thx, most are reasonably collected for this timeframe, but today's was a bit harder to find as I recall.

Here is the last Horngroschen that I'll be posting in a row. This one was minted at Colditz in 1465:

Beautiful coins!

...but, um, where's the 5 in the horngroschen's date? I can't quite figure out what part of that mess after the 6 is a 5.

AFAIK there are no known coins dated 1464 in the AD calendar (old listings included some but apparently that turned out to be in error), so unless @ttkoo (and/or @bd251) has good AH date coverage of this period, we'll probably end up with some gaps soon (for the first time on this thread so far).

Thanks! I like to think about the "chunkiness" relative to coins I would deal with in circulation. This one is about the same diameter as a US nickel, but weighs more than three times as much.

Some of the Delhi tankas that I posted a while back are smaller in diameter than a dime, but weigh just over four times as much.
It's interesting to compare that to the contemporary European coins; Google tells me that a horngroschen is 28 mm and 3 grams, which makes it (much) larger than a US quarter but half the weight of one. IIRC some of the other types are even thinner.

though I've got bids in on some dates we've recently passed ... for How Far Back 8th
If you do get the coins, you're welcome to post them here as well! This thread is (intended to be, at least) pretty open on catch-up posts.

Great question @j1m. Some of the dates are a bit wonky as we have seen. In this case, I believe that the number 5 is sideways. As always, I'm open to alternate explanations.

I'm out until 1459. I think bd251 has a 1460 Gujarat coin from memory

Yes, I'd agree with that after looking at Numista's example

Me too. I have some coins which are datable to the intervening years, such as 1464 for today, but none explicitly state the date as required by the rules of this thread.
