I found a 1972 Eisenhower coin that's not in great shape but it has these craters on the back of the coin. I'm trying to learn about all the PMD that can happen and how it happens. Can someone tell me what they are and how they might have gotten there?

to the CCF!

It looks like corrosion of some kind. All of the surfaces seem to be pitted around these 'craters', maybe by some sort of acid. I wonder if the areas that show as green are the same as the 'craters', but they haven't been cleaned yet. It could be that this coin was buried for a time in an acidic environment.

I forgot to mention that the "craters" are only on the one side. The coin has been in a box in a closet for years until a relative just passed away and I got it.

lamination on a clad coin?
I'm thinking strike through grease or just corrosion.

Yes a lamination on a clad coin is possible, while it is a rare occurrence.

Wonderful information from all of you! I didn't even know about lamination on issues on coins until now! Thank you all very much! I truly appreciate all the knowledge sharing and insight I'm gaining from here!

Not thinking lamination. Has the apperance of strike through issues, possibly gritty grease.

An accurate weight would be fun to consider.

Thanks for Coop's thread Tacc, but as he said in that graphic it is rare, so I do not usually even think of lams on clad coins. Clamshells, yes just not lams.

Yeah I was kinda reaching there I know, but why not present the far outside possibilities sometimes?
They do fall into line from time to time.

The way the surface is pitted around those depressions it could have very well been exposed to some kind of acid.

Yes, I agree, all possibilities should be brought up - it is the best way to come to a logical explanation.

I could be a smart aleck and say there are a couple of craters (on the moon) that actually belong on the reverse.
