I'm 73 and have collected coins since I was about 7. My collection, like all my friends, went in the ubiquitous blue Whitman album (Lincoln cents of course). Never came close to filling it, and of course the 1909-S VDB was the object of my desire. This said, and I firmly believe in letting people collect what they want to, however they want to, I don't understand people's fascination with these Dansco folders. Sorry, but they seem to be a storage solution for a beginning collector. Is the Dansco folder inert such that the coins placed in them are reasonably protected from degradation? It seems to me that the coins coming into contact with the folder might be subject to chemical change. How does one get the coins in their respective places without touching them? Everyone uses cotton gloves? My own collection is fairly small, and what I do have is almost entirely in PCGS and NGC slab. I liked that I was finally able to discern what 7070 was referencing. I hope no one took offense to this posting, I didn't intend any. As I said, each to their own. Whatever floats your boat. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

A Dansco, like Whitman or Littleton or any of the other brands is just a vessel. I have about ~250 slabbed coins and the Albums are so much more enjoyable than the slabs. But I'm not going to put expensive high grade coins in an album. My Lincoln set has 2 1909 S VDB's, one is slabbed the other is raw. I also have the Mercury 16 D and the Indian Head 1877, but each is a lower graded raw coin. An Album gives you a view that looking at slabs can never. For example. This is nicer to look at: Then this. As to your questions " Is the Dansco folder inert such that the coins placed in them are reasonably protected from degradation?"Based on my experiences, yes they are inert. I have not seen any change in the coins in the years I've had them in the albums. "How does one get the coins in their respective places without touching them? Everyone uses cotton gloves?"I use cotton gloves

My understanding is that the Dansco albums are made of archive grade materials that should not tone or otherwise affect the coins. I also use the slipcases that are available to further protect the coins. And then they go into a ziplock bag with anti desiccant packs.
I just like the presentation of albums more. I feel like I am working towards something rather than just collecting a bunch of individual coins.
I use cotton gloves to carefully place the coins in the album and am careful with the slides as well.
It really comes down to personal preference as to how you like to store and display your collection.

This thread provides a good comparison of the different album brands. Dansco albums are generally considered to be the highest quality albums on the market, hence their popularity. Also, as jbuck noted, an album is different from a folder. Albums only come into contact with the edge of the coins, while folders touch the edge and one whole side. But the storage environment is key.
