Oh brother. Well, the Mint is a business. Profit will always trump what the "common" customer wants.

I believe the Mint has chosen the flowing hair silver medal and gold coin as a litmus test of a new (to the Mint) marketing model: creation of "scarce" to "rare" collectibles tailored to deep pocketed speculators / collectors who are as far removed from the numismatic hobby as one can imagine. I can envision the Mint trying to improve mint and proof set sales by salting in limited-edition coins, signed serially numbered COA's, redemption cards ( You may be a winner ! ) for cancelled dies or even rare coins / medals from the archives. A fair number of people paid $104 for a flowing hair medal that included a chance at a limited number of privy marked examples. . .How many extra mint sets would be sold at $45 or $50 if they included a chance at a rare collectible, e.g., a 2011 25th Anniversary ASE 5 Coin Set, or a 2014W 50th Anniversary gold Kennedy half ? 2025's product release schedule and any further excursions into the Flowing Hair marketing methodology will foreshadow the bifurcation of Semiquincentennial numismatic releases in 2026. I suspect there will be plenty of "common" issues to be had and a whole slew of "limited edition" items with price tags beyond the reach of average collectors.

Quote: And speaking of the flowing hair gold coin, mine just arrived! Outstanding! Quote: I normally wouldn't have paid extra for next-day shipping, but given how much this puppy cost I thought I could afford to splurge on the extra $20.

Very nice gold there. Congrats! I assume the white specs/lines are on the capsule or lint and not on the coin.
The auction number one with dies may top 100K. In that price range there's a lot of other things I'd rather have, such as an acreage to build on or a couple classic cars, maybe 1936 ford convertible with rumble seat like my dad had when I was young.

One thing you can be sure of - the Mint does not place your interests above it's own bottom line.
When I was young, you thought of Mint products as kind of a public service.
That's really a long time ago

And as we have previously established, you are a lot older than me. *** a voice whispering in my ear ***What is that you say? *** more whispers ***All things considered, the Frog and I are relatively close in age? Yeah, when people say "thirty years ago" I am still thinking, like, 1970. But I digress, yes, the Mint has changed a lot since we were younger.

It's currently 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday 11/19. The Flowing Hair Gold coin is still showing as "not available" which I believe means they don't have any ready to go, but they'll be making more at a later date. I believe this has happened before with other issues. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone recall how long it took before additional inventory became available, or is it possible they sold 17,500 coins in 10 minutes on the first day? Have they released sales figures for that first day yet?

Quote: That's really a long time ago Yeah; like when proof sets cost $2.10, you had to mail in a check or postal money order with your order and you then waited 6 to 9 months for it to be shipped to an address you no longer lived at!

The waiting was never joyful. No tracking back then, and no easy way to know if they even got your check! We moved every year when I was growing up, so timing the order was always a challenge.
