I was told the subject example is genuine; I am struggling with that, but these are not in my wheelhouse...

1881-CC is one of the most counterfeited coins I see in the Marketplace; they were shown in this forum with some markers back in 2018- 1st image:

1881-CC-Morgan--Good-Or-Bad?

They can often be "authenticated" at a glance, with the slash on the eagle's breast and the mintmark, appearing as a cross between the 2 known VAM reverses.
.
The subject example has the best images of one I have seen to date, but to my eye match the counterfeit example and the "CC" does not match either genuine variety.- next image:

I added the "dot" under the lips as a common obv marker and had not noticed it until reviewing this latest example.

I'm not convinced the subject example matches the known counterfeit. The slash on the breast looks to me to be at a slightly shallower angle, and in a slightly different location. You could do an overlay to confirm if it matches exactly. And the CC mintmark seems to be a match with VAM-6. Not sure what to make of the dot under the lip.

I do not think it is a counterfeit. It has some issues but the overall level of detail and just its general appearance would have me leaning towards authentic.

It's possible that the counterfeit was done from dies based on a genuine coin, yes? If so, that might explain similar die markers.

I am leaning towards genuine, but the counterfeit die could have been upgraded to remove some of the die markers. It would be interesting to know if there are tool markings above the D in dollar to remove the bump on the OP coin.

Pretty much what I was thinking - but the odds the it was this particular coin is astronomical.

I did an overlay of the subject coin with both the known counterfeit and a genuine coin. The slash on the breast is definitely lower and angled differently than on the counterfeit coin, and the mintmark is an exact match for VAM-6. So I also believe the coin is genuine.
