Here is a close up of one of my 1942 D penny's.
What do you think of the close up. It looks too fat to me.
I can get the whole coin picture later if any one wants

There are some nice 40's doubled dies with thick dates and LIBERTY but this one would be hard to tell with it's damage and circulation flattening.

That makes sense. I'll get a picture of the whole coin both sides. Maybe other spots will show better

Circulation flattening is what I'm thinking--not terribly uncommon with worn wheat cents.

Wow, I didn't know flattening was a thing, but it makes sense. But if it's flattened, why does all the lettering still have good raise? That is the only thing that seems weird to me. Like I have plenty of buffalos, Mercury and Barbers that are flattened, and honestly it just seems a little different like, they really aren't flat and still have
good heigth? Except for a few spots like the 4 and two arent as standout as most of the rest. The E also looks a bit flattened.
I'll do some research and try to figure out the flattening effect. Thank you for letting me know it is a thing.

they don't get flattened all the way. the tops get smashed down a bit, think of a metal bar that has been hit repeatedly on the end with a hammer - the end will flatten out and eventually 'mushroom' out and get wider.

Circulation and hits don't affect the whole coin the same. Some places wear different than others.

Thank you for the replies everybody.
Evident alluring it seems some of us have a harder time discerning DDs from flattening until we get some experience.
Thank you for your time, the info is truly helpful, it makes more sense in this post than some of the info I looked up!
