I would like to enlist the help of the knowledge on this forum in evaluating the condition of my dad's completed Morgan dollar collection. I have more trust in the combined opinions offered from fellow members than I would that of a LCS in this endeavor. My goal is to reach a reasonable retail value of this collection on my dad's behalf. Not so sure the LCS would provide this. A same day appraisal does not seem possible IMO. And leaving it foran extended appraisal time raises concerns of getting the same coins back. I know this approach will be somewhat time consuming but time is not an immediate concern. Hopefully, with your combined consensus, I will be able to determine a fair value for each coin based on recent sales in similar condition. If I knew the process I would attempt to convert Greysheet bid prices to retail but that is beyond my pay grade. If any of you could offer fair retail opinions on the submitted coins, that would be great as well. It has taken my dad a great amount of time to put this collection together. He has compiled an inventory which includes his opinion of grade and value for each coin. After a consensus is reached on each one, I will let you know what his opinion was for comparison. The inventory was compiled about three years ago and his values are based at that time. So, without further adue, I will start submitting images beginning in chronological order. Please offer up your opinions to include problems(details) that you encounter as well as any VAM varieties you might pick up. I am also going to practice my own evaluation and examination throughout the process. Thanks in advance for your help and participation as well as any advice you may offer to assist me through this project. Hopefully images are adequate.

Unfortunately, this first one is a details coin due to the damage (scratches) across the surfaces, with minimal numismatic value.

I'm going with XF-details due to the issues halfamind noted. Zero numismatic premium for this one, value is bullion only IMO.

Thanks for the info. I have been thruogh hundreds of coins from my dad's collection and in the process have constantly encountered many issues. It seems his grading skills are quite lacking. As well a large number of cleaned, scratched, damaged, errors and varieties where there is none. I completely expected that would be the case here as well. I just hope he didn't get taken to bad in acquiring this set. Wondering if this is a waste of all of ours efforts.

XF details, damaged, cleaned That being said, all long nock 78 8TF's carry at least a modest premium with VAM collectors, even harshly cleaned examples.

All said, a goodly pile of Morgans is not something to diss--just my opinion. Excellent photos by-the-way.

All Morgans are VAM's. This is a 8/7 long nock reverse, the type that PCGS designates as "weak" on holders If you google 1878 8/7 TF long nock VAM's you can find the SSDC VAM website and look there to narrow it down.

Don't despair. There may still be some gems hiding in his collection, especially if it's a "complete" set, or even a complete date set.

This is a 99 coin set. 1960 Whitman bookshelf albums (3). 1877-1886, 1887-1896, and 1897-1921. Set includes 1878 7/8tf, 1878 7tf, and 1895 proof. The only vacant hole is the 1895 PR. I'll keep em coming.
