Hello all, Thanks for a great site. I just found this quarter and wanted to get some insight. I am new to the Washington quarter numismatics. Is this a common error...not common but seen before? Thanks Edited by GeSeas 08/23/2024 5:52 pm

@ges, with the current pic, it does look like a re-punched mintmark. However, since I'm not finding it listed over on varietyvista: http://www.varietyvista.com/09b%20W...201963-D.htmmaybe you instead have an example of Machine Doubling? Please post a super close-up image of just the mintmark if you can as that would help. Thx. Added: also please confirm that you have the correct year (1963). Thx.

Perfect close-up. That definitely looks like MD to me (well machine tripling technically). It still has the intrinsic value of the silver though even if not an error.

Could this be an example of both types of doubling? I keep focusing on the very bottom of the 'D' mintmark in that last photograph. That's not a shelf; looks rounded. just saying... Thanks for the comments.
