*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***My Mint set came in the mail 3 days ago and when I opened it up to look at it, I noticed on the womens quarters set that 2 of the 5 coins had a gold hue to them. I have tried different lighting to see if maybe the plastic is throwing that color hue on those 2 quarters but they are still colored. Now, my concern is that they might be toning already or the plastic case is causing that gold hue to it. If it is the case then ok so be it, but if they are toning already, I fear what they might look like down the road. Has anyone else noticed this ?

I don't have any 2024 Mint Sets yet, but yes I have indeed noticed toning on past mint sets. Unfortunately the plastic cases are not 100% airtite and you could get environmental toning on any mint set really. The plastic itself would not cause toning.

I guess what I meant to say is that the refraction of light by the plastic could be causing it to look golden but when I try different lighting they are still that golden hue. I also bought a 2023 American Innovation $1 Coin proof set and man the toning on 2 of those coins is strong, especially when you get the light just right.

I noticed it around 2021 and after. Hazing mainly, so for 2021 and after I started to buy the quarters in PCGS holders. The mint holders for some reason don't like copper. The quarters in PCGS holders look great so far.

I can't say for sure with US Mint products, but when other mints experienced such "golden toning" it appeared to be a reaction between the solution used to wash the coin blanks (i.e., planchets), the housing into which the struck coins were placed and environmental factors (potentially storage environment).

Quote: environmental factors (potentially storage environment). This cannot be discounted. The lenses are not air-tight.

The Mint fulfillment center, the postal service distribution network (buildings and & vehicles), your mailbox, etc.
Seeing as how you just got them, you may have good reason to return/exchange them.

Now I am curious to see how they tone out over the years, I keep my other coins well kept, I have not had any issues in the last 50 years with coins toning or going bad. Thanks for your input and everyone else for theirs, always appreciated....

I had that on a set of innovation coins last year. Returned for a new set with no issues.

This is good to hear and it sounds like whatever you decided to do, the set you keep will be in good hands.

Yeah. I called them first since I had never done a return anything in the past. Fortunately those innovation coins weren't going to sell out. I used the return label they gave me. I can't remember now if I had to make a separate order for the new ones of if they could do a replacement. If it had been a limited production coin it might have been more of a problem.
