I have a 1955 P Mint Set and I took it out to really really look at it because something about it just doesn't look right. I keep coming back to this dime and for a Proof Set coin there is something wrong with it. It must have been one of the last coins struck on this die because it looks really horrible to me at least but I do not have the keen eye that some of you have. I will post whole pics of Obverse and Reverse then zoom in on the areas that have me puzzled.

Again Thanks for your input.

With the somewhat dark photos, I suspect Die Deterioration is a strong factor here. Looks like there may be some subtle toning as well.

Lots of toning — exposed to "dirty" air or humid conditions at some point.

To me it looks like minor DDD and not a LDS=late die state more like mid to early die wear. Also, the light reflection adds to it. It is not easy to take pics of a proof coin. Also might be seeing a bit of MD.

Definitely some toning on the coins in the set, which made me take it out and look at it, it had some toning on it when I got it over 30 years ago but only paid like $5.00 for the set and said why not But I suspect it was not kept good up until the point I got it, as the cello was deteriorating. Put it up like I do all my other coins and forgot about it (didnt have a scope back then) But man that coin looks rough not to mention the rough/bumpy surface all over. Worse case the coin is silver and at least has that value. At first I thought Double Die but then, what I learned from you I said No, not that.....
