Would mint bags contains rolls of coins? I see this mint sealed bag (year unknown) up for auction by a reputable auctioneer. The bumps in the bag appear to be from rolls rather than loose coins. Still 12 days to go in the auction.

Yes, back in the day, the mint(s) distributed loose business strike coins in canvas bags. Now they use large capacity, high strength poly bags--with the contents still loose.

No, not a mint sealed bag. Anybody with a lead seal and crimper can seal such a bag. The mint bags were also reused by banks and various business's to transport cash. I worked at a large chain grocery store and we would send deposits and change orders to the bank in lead sealed bags like that one via armored trucks and the bank would send back our order in the same fashion. (We got change by the full box but $1 & $5 dollar bills sealed in bag. smaller stores got rolled change in a bag like that).

As John says, I've always thought that mint bags contained only loose coins (thus the term "bag marks" on coins).

I thought meant sealed bags were always sewn shut. Not with ties around them.

Thank you for all the answers! Every time I run through the pics, it just convinces me more that they are rolled which I thought was unusual. There is 1 photo of the lead seal on the bag. Ratman may have nailed it and this bag was made at a bank or somewhere else. Now I'm even more curious about the cents inside it.

That bag looks to be full of rolls, not loose Cents, but I agree that bags from the mint were loose. Probably sent from the mint to a bank or distribution company (Brinks, etc) who then rolled them for distribution to businesses.

Most mint bags I own have a date and mint on them, but this one is blank. Would be good to hear from others to see what % of bags are marked vs unmarked.
