Hello friends, got this 1798 cent which I believe is type 2 hair type. Pls share your thoughts on the grade of this coin and if it has any chance at a straight grade with the hit visible in the hair... Appreciate all your inputs. Pls Note: pictures were taken outdoors under bright sunlight. *** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Please put as much info in the title as you can, they are very important. ***Edited by RockyRock 09/01/2024 09:53 am

Agree it's a second hairstyle, in fact, I believe it's an S-184 if you're interested. I'd say G-6, although some of the date weakness might be from an uneven strike. Too bad about the hit on the lower hair—it looks recent given the color. If it was an old hit that had toned over, it would likely be a straight grade. With a fresh gouge like this, I'm not so sure.

VG8. I don't think that it would straight grade at a TPG, but this isn't the sort of coin you TPG. Early copper likes to be (carefully) held and appreciated.

they are quite a bit more lenient in these very early coppers. VG8 I'm on the fence w/straight grade. if you twisted my arm i'd have to say it would details but I think its borderline and could go either way. value wise probably not worth the grading fee's plus what Zurie stated. they like to be held

Has a nice look to it. A soak in VC for a few hours would improve the surfaces. I agree with VG-08.
Title should be changed to Draped Bust.

Definitely a Draped Bust, beat-up but tolerable.

Might make VG10 but VG8 was my first thought.

if you soak this in anything acetone or VC its going to enhance the surfaces even more and you might not like what you see.
leave her be

Thanks John for fixing the title.
And thanks for all your inputs on this beautiful coin... And I am paranoid about playing with copper coins even with acetone dip... I have had bad experiences before so I generally do not go more than washing the copper coins with distilled water and leave it there... Thanks for all your inputs again.
