Epic fail for me and the exhibitors. I got there a few minutes after it opened this morning and I figured a goodly number of sellers/buyers would be gone. I wasn't prepared for 80-85% of them taking off after Friday or in the midst of packing their stuff then and there.
I knew DLRC was leaving Friday, and I really wanted to sit down with them. Other major auction companies? Nowhere to be found. I asked ANACS if they'd still have a table Saturday and was assured they would. Nope. The only table in the whole joint that had a number of people around it was PCGS', though CACG and NGC still had a presence. The extreme rarities on display that I'd hoped to eyeball? Gone.
For me, $20 parking, tolls, and 1/3 of a tank of gas, and $30 to put my little furry daughter in doggie daycare... all for naught. I was out the door in less than two hours. I'd heard rumblings before and during the first days of the show that things were very rough. As a longtime reporter, I made sure to chat up a number of retailers. The rumblings were quite true, unfortunately. Retail-wise they had a miserable show, and several said the only thing that saved it from being a Titanic-style disaster was the buying and selling among dealers. Caveat Emptor re: the next two GACC shows. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I've seen a YouTube video talking about dealers leaving early from shows, by noon the last day or even day before.

Typical. Dealers go there to trade with other dealers, once their deals are made many leave early. Much of that is done before the doors even open to the public.

Same story at the Word's Fair of Money. I was there on a Friday and many dealer already were packing up. Not sure I understand the dealer-to-dealer sales. That just drives prices up even further. Which means even less sales to cash-strapped consumers. In the end, coin purchases are discretionary and come dead last when spending money.

Dealers go to shows to fill want lists and certain items they need for inventory. Once they complete that, they leave. Not all dealers, but a majority of the big guys.

I learned this lesson in the past as well. Certainly by the afternoon of a multi-day show many dealers have left. Admission was free on the Saturday at The WFoM in Rosemont this past August. I was there over multiple days, but I felt bad for the attendees just there on Saturday. I estimate 20% of dealers had packed up by end of day Friday, 50% by noon on Saturday and 80% by 2pm.

I think the show sponsors need to regulate this sort of thing, but I'm sure that will fall on flat ears. Why don't they include in their ads, "Most dealers will be gone by noon Saturday."

No need to regulate, Coinfrog. Eventually, collectors will figure it out and come to the realization that it is no use to go to this show any longer.

If there is an admission charge for the general public, then I agree that dealers should be required to stay for the duration of the show. Otherwise visitors are getting ripped off.

It kills a show to have the dealers packing up early. It is contagious and gets worse and worse with each show. Buyers stop showing up because they know the dealers will have deserted the show early.
Maybe some incentives to stay to the very end might help such as a refund of part of the table fees for the ones that stick it out.

Interesting conversation. I'd like to hear from members on this forum who set up as dealers/vendors at coin shows. Thoughts?
