I would say this coin is struck through a heavy amount of oil.
But it looks too weak a strike on both sides.
Weight is 4.90 gms.

CCF?
Outside of rims are smooth and undamaged.
Exact same size as normal nickel.

Aye, looks to be a Dryer Coin, and may have been exposed to a corrosive environment as well. Love how the rim 'rolls' into the text/letters that are in proximity to the rim. An accurate weight to two decimal places might tell us more.

To CCF! Looks like a Dryer Coin. PMD. Not an error coin.

How about a grease-mediated radial smear?

I agree. A Dryer Coin from extremely worn dies.

If you go through a lot of nickels, you'll see many pre-2000 that have bloated lettering that fades into the field from Die Deterioration much like cents in the pic below (many times even worse). Being in a dryer pushed the rims in and smoothed out the faces of the coin.

Thanks; still learning. Seems like most Dryer Coins have noticeable rim damage, while this one has a smooth rim. The late stage attrition of the die adds another dimension and error-ref.com does have an image very similar to this coin [but with more damage around the edge].
