Looks like an enormous gas bubble but feels solid. Any ideas ?

I have found several of these large chips 83 LMC but inside the of the 8. The condition I've found them on is about BU. I hang on to them because they are interesting and in nice grade.

To me it appears like a plating split and the zinc under it is starting to rise. This happens often on the bottom of the mint marks.

It happens.

It's definitely a die break in the date. The shape, size, and the way it mingles with the devices are the give away clues. It's not a bubble or split plating.

Coop - those huge rot blossoms usually only happen around the mintmark and are a result of split plating. I don't see a split on this 1983 cent.

what caught my eye was the gray in the center of the chip. The copper may have worn off that point. That is what made me think copper rot.
