Today when I went to the bank serving the retirement community, the teller told me that she had only two half dollars. When she handed them to me, I could tell that one of them was a silver coin -- a nice uncirculated 1967 Kennedy half dollar. Too bad she didn't have one or two rolls like that! The tellers at that branch are very friendly, and fortunately for me remain unfamiliar with silver coins.

It occurred to me that some residents might be cashing in rolls of silver quarters or dimes. Therefore, I asked the teller if she had any customer-wrapped rolls in those denominations. I could see the rolls when she opened the drawer where they were stored. Drat -- none of them were in old-fashioned wrappers. I didn't find any silver coins in the two rolls of quarters and three rolls of dimes that I subsequently acquired. Maybe next time.

Later I searched 10 rolls of dimes wrapped by Loomis that I acquired at a different bank. In one roll I spied a silver dime with a very worn edge. Is it a Mercury dime, I thought? Nope -- just a heavily-circulated 1947 Roosevelt dime in Good condition. I appreciate finding a common-date Roosevelt silver dime almost as much as finding a common-date Mercury dime -- unless the latter one is missing from my coin collection.

Seems like a lot of effort for such a small return.

Mais oui. Like other CRHs, most of the time I don't find silver when I purchase rolled coins. I described my most recent (modest) half-dollar find because I've been pleasantly surprised to acquire silver and/or proof coins during each of my last four visits to that bank -- an unusual streak.

I've developed a technique to efficiently examine Loomis-wrapped coin rolls. I cut each one lengthwise using a box cutter, and then carefully open the roll to examine the edges of the coins. If I don't find any silver, I tightly close the roll using two pieces of tape. I typically complete this search in less than two minutes per roll. Only one bank teller has refused to accept these rolls even if they notice that they have been opened.

Most of us are not into this for the return... the fun part of this hobby is finding cool stuff... there's no feeling quite like finding silver in the wild!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
