First, I would like to know if this is truly a no F Buffalo nickel. Neither CoinFacts or NGC VarietyPlus show a no F as a variety for this year. If this does turn out to be a no F coin, what type of additional premium would it having this designation bring to this coin? I just want to get an idea to see if it's worth sending it in to the TPG for attribution.

The area where the F should be:

The F on the die is raised above the surface so can easily be broken off or polished off. I don't really know if that would cause a premium over the normal value though.

It could have been polished off. The coin is so worn, that there are no traces of polishing lines there, so it could be anybody's guess at this point.

I don't believe this would carry a premium.

It's hard to tell from the photos whether the missing designer's initial is a result of die polishing or PMD. The only notable "no-F" Buffalo that I know of is the 1916 Philly - it does carry an appreciable premium because it's listed in CPG and is attributable. If this is the real deal, it may be worth a submission to the appropriate attribution group.

Nice one, the late Ron Pope documents the 1936 P "No F" in his book Abraded Die Varieties, here is link to it on internet archive.

This is one of the less common No F's so there is likely a premium to the right collector. There is generally less interest in them than the more dramatic 2 feather abraded dies but as was mentioned only 1916 has an FS number and is generally sold for a greater premium than the 2F of the same year which is interesting. I believe ANACS will attribute anything listed in Pope's reference but haven't tried to do that with mine. Still pick them up whenever I see them non-attributed.

The F initial is raised on the die so could be subject to polishing off or getting damaged from clashing or excessing use or a combination of all of the above. There are 20 or so noted No F's in Pope's book and like 2F's have various levels of the feature remaining.

It was a sad day when Ron died of cancer complications in November 2021. I was a good friend of his and right before he passed away had sent me signed copies of both of his books!

Very helpful 1buff

I've had this coin since 2006 so now I have a narrative to share with it.
