Hello all!

I found a 1985 LMC looking through some coins today, and it appears to not have any copper plating. I was wondering if anyone knows what could have happened to this coin. PMD, mint error, something else? I haven't seen this before. Also, it doesn't appear to be tampered with in terms of scratches or noticeable melt marks.

I tested, and it is not magnetic. Unfortunately, I do not have a scale, but it doesn't seem to be any thinner than a normal copper plated penny.

Any and all insights are appreciated!

An accurate weight to two decimal places would give us a solid clue about what the issue is. Unfortunate that a scale isn't readily available.

The weight of your coin would help us. I'm thinking PMD. The coin's plating might have been removed.

I will hold onto it until I can get my hands on a precise scale. Just curious, what would the weight say about what happened to the coin? Are there different scenarios for what could have happened based on the weight?

a normal zinc cent will weigh 2.5 grams, a significant loss of weight will tell if the plating is missing.

It appears that there must have been a lot of school chemistry class experiments on removing the copper from zinc cents back in the 80's. We sure do see a lot of these on CCF.

If the copper is fully missing it would account for 2.5% of the mass, or about a 0.06 gram reduction from the normal value of 2.5 grams. However, that wouldn't tell you WHY the zinc is missing, as it could have been a scientific experiment or something similar.

Texture and color makes me think it is a chemical that has been induced on coin.

Thanks for all the info, everyone!

Based on the responses, I am assuming the copper plating was chemically stripped, but I might still hold onto it just for fun

micrba,
Did you post the correct pic? The 1995 looks like the one you posted with a scratch on it,and your title reads 1985

The original picture was a 1985, but the OP used the same file name to post the 1995 in a different topic.

@micrba each picture uploaded requires a unique name.

yes, at one point the correct image *was here, but when he posted in another topic http://goccf.com/t/471126)
He apparently use the same file name.

to the OP:

Every time you upload an image please make sure it has a unique file name - don't re-use them over and over again.
