1938 S DDR-001, 1-R-VI Lincoln Cent (MDS)

1938 S DDR-001 MS/BU Lincoln Cent (EDS), Very Early Stage A? (There is no die crack through the middle of the right wheat to the rim)
I recently acquired a pair of the above variety as confirmed by MM placement and die crack under the center of the bust.
For easier comparison, here's the:
VV listing- http://www.varietyvista.com/01a%20L...8SDDR001.htm
C C listing- https://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln...ie_state=mds
D D listing- https://www.doubleddie.com/675255.html

VV & CC have it listed as a Class 6.
DD as a Class 6 + Class 2 on the wheat tips.

My examples clearly show separation on both wheat tips and the outside band of the wheat ears. The Class 2 is stronger on the left wheat.

VV images don't seem to show any separation on the wheat tips but CC does (barely and I only noticed it because I know it's there from my examples), yet both sites are saying this is only Class 6.

ps. One example has light, incuse prestrike planchet damage as well, similar to the arc of a cent. It is on the reverse starting at the R (PLUR), through NE to the M (UNUM). I don't believe it is an incomplete clip because there isn't a matching arc on the obverse, opposite this arc.

There is another similar arc near LIBERTY. Both arcs were pre-strike.

Enjoy and feel free to add any insight on the Class 2 separation or the pre-strike planchet arcs.

You have a talent for explanation of errors, thanks for sharing that. I would have thought the pre-clip was just a scratch so I will document that in my note book, very helpful.

Very nice DDR! great documentation too, but I'm surprised that you didn't highlight the very obvious 'snownam' dot by theE of EPU.

Thanks for the really nice comments.
And thanks Dearborn, for mentioning the shape of the first dot in EPU. The "snowman" shows up pretty well in the 4th image even though it's out of focus.

As a followup, Bob Pizza, who was an attributor and imaged this variety for CopperCoins, replied on another forum.
He reiterated what I suspected about the class 2 doubling designation in general. He basically said the separation would need to show on the letters of EPU as well to truly be class 2.

Another thing he said was that this is MD on the wheat tips and outside wheat lines, which I'm not sure I agree with since it's on both my coins and the DD images. Plus, it doesn't look like conventional MD to me.

What I do wonder, and haven't asked about, is whether Class 2 separation could have been eliminated by the class 6 doubling, since the class 6 is so strong in EPU in this variety.

I'll let you know if I find out anything different.

Thanks again everyone for your interest.

Nice! I appreciate how well you've documented the coin.
