Has anyone seen one of these? My father-in-law passed away about a month ago and my wife found his coin collection while going through his things. She showed this to me, and I wanted to get some professional opinions on it. I can't see any sign of plating. There doesn't seem to be any copper showing through anywhere. A magnet will not pick it up or has any effect on it at all. I'm unsure if it is silver or something else. Its weight is 3.17g. I found 4 on ebay similar to it selling for $450-$4000. The sellers on ebay did not give much of a description other than "rare". Other than that, I have found no other info relating to it online. Can anyone help me out with this? All opinions welcome.

HyerJK, you have a normal 1980-D Lincoln Cent that has been plated.

I don't have much experience with plated coins. What is the telltale sign that a coin has been plated? I have always looked for any signs of copper showing through the plating. At least on coins that are typically copper. And does anyone know who is responsible for these plated coins?

I agree with it being plated.
The normal weight should be 3.11 grams +/- .13 grams mint tolerance.
The ones you seen on the bay, were they slabbed by a TPG?

The likelihood that this is a normal coin that has been plated is very high. An accurate weight of this coin will help clarify what it really is.

When I saw the shine on the edge of the coin then I was sure it was plated.

Just asking the crew.. Did a missing, worn or broken collar cause the reeded edge/rim?

Oops, I missed that. It's definitely plated post-mint and done pretty well as Dearborn said.

The minor striations visible may be due to a worn collar. It's nothing out of the ordinary, I think and it's nowhere near being able to be called reeding.

The image of the edge being shiny sure indicates a plated cent.

Not any "one" person or entity is responsible for plating coins after they leave the mint. Some are experiments like others have said and some are done to deceive folks.
(To be clear, I'm not saying anyone you know was trying to deceive.)

Well, I will let my wife know to not start packing her stuff just yet. She doesn't have the million-dollar coin so she is still stuck with me for the time being. Ha-ha!
I was kind of afraid that it might be plated but wasn't quite sure what all to look for.
John1 - No sir, none of them I saw on ebay were slabbed.
Marve65 - I guess you're right. The fact that its silver is a pretty good indication that its plated. Ha-ha! Left myself open for that one.
Thank you all for helping me out with this one. As always, I appreciate the professional insight.
