HyerJK, you have a normal 1980-D Lincoln Cent that has been plated.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I don't have much experience with plated coins. What is the telltale sign that a coin has been plated? I have always looked for any signs of copper showing through the plating. At least on coins that are typically copper. And does anyone know who is responsible for these plated coins?

I agree with it being plated. The normal weight should be 3.11 grams +/- .13 grams mint tolerance. The ones you seen on the bay, were they slabbed by a TPG? John1

The likelihood that this is a normal coin that has been plated is very high. An accurate weight of this coin will help clarify what it really is.

When I saw the shine on the edge of the coin then I was sure it was plated.

Just asking the crew.. Did a missing, worn or broken collar cause the reeded edge/rim?

Quote: Its weight is 3.17g Oops, I missed that. It's definitely plated post-mint and done pretty well as Dearborn said. Quote: Did a missing, worn or broken collar cause the reeded edge/rim? The minor striations visible may be due to a worn collar. It's nothing out of the ordinary, I think and it's nowhere near being able to be called reeding.

The image of the edge being shiny sure indicates a plated cent.
Not any "one" person or entity is responsible for plating coins after they leave the mint. Some are experiments like others have said and some are done to deceive folks. (To be clear, I'm not saying anyone you know was trying to deceive.)
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Well, I will let my wife know to not start packing her stuff just yet. She doesn't have the million-dollar coin so she is still stuck with me for the time being. Ha-ha! I was kind of afraid that it might be plated but wasn't quite sure what all to look for. John1 - No sir, none of them I saw on ebay were slabbed. Marve65 - I guess you're right. The fact that its silver is a pretty good indication that its plated. Ha-ha! Left myself open for that one. Thank you all for helping me out with this one. As always, I appreciate the professional insight.
