Hi everyone can anyone tell me why this 1983 p dime is black on the obverse and white and silver on the reverse? Reverse side also just looks odd? Let me know what you all think thank you.

Looks like someone painted it, perhaps with nail polish. Try soaking it in acetone to see if anything happens.

Some sort of PMD. Maybe paint like Hondo Boguss stated.

It looks like it may have spent some time underground or under water.

Normally I would say painted because it was common for coins in that era to be painted. You say acetone did not take it off so, maybe the ruff damage on rev. is from being on the road therefore, tar like substance is baked on obv.? Only a theory but in any case, it is a damaged coin worth 10 cents.

Yes, post-strike damage. Looks to be a stubborn, somewhat gritty dark film which made its way onto the obverse--now wearing off on the high points. Reverse shows a similar, but a 'milky' film. Coin may have spent time at the bottom of a poorly maintained fountain or pond.

I agree. I am leaning more towards environmental exposure. The obverse looks cool. A fun find to keep, but it is not worth more than face value.

Environmental Damage here. Othello!! Great game! I need to find that in one of my 50,000 boxes I need to unpack after moving.

I used to move every year when I was growing up. The packing and unpacking was never fun. I have not moved in over twenty years now. Envy you, I do not. Good luck!

Acetone is not a paint stripper.

Someone needs to tell that to the all paint I have removed with it in my past. Also, what do you think nail polish is? To be sure, not all paints are equal and acetone works better on some than others, but it works nonetheless.

That being said, a longer soak may put the question to bed.

Looks like some kind of acidic action going on.
