Came across this interesting one recently during a CRH. These ridges are all raised. Only appear in the last two bays. Too evenly spaced symmetrical to be polishing or scratches or gouges. Appears to be a small section of the column fluting doubled in the last two bays. Not listed as a DDR on VV, CC or Wex. All thoughts and opinions are welcome. That could be an unlisted DDR. Pretty cool find!

I am not sure what it may be other than abrasions or gouges that were partially polished out. A doubled die does not make sense, it does not align with anything, there are too many marks to match doubling (five in bay ten) and you can see them above the right side of the memorial too in the field. Very cool looking but in my opinion, not a doubled die. My guess is concentric die scratches that did not get polished out.

I agree with makecents that it doesn't look like a DDR. Die gouges would be my guess.

Die gouges make sense seeing they are raised. Never saw anything like that before.....

I don't have anything to add, but I've never seen that before. Interesting post!

Couple more images. These are taken at a 25% angle and progressively focused from the center of the coin. There is a sharply defined straight edge at the bottom of the gouges that isn't being picked up in the images. And though the gouges appear to arc around the coin that may not be the case. The two gouges at the top right cornice are slanted and not consistent with the many other gouges which are at a 90 angle to the center of the coin. This can be seen in the gouges between the C and the I, and the I and the R. So I still am puzzled.

the marks extend out beyond the last pillar - die dents do make cents here.

Thanks for the feedback Parnelli917. Attached is my 1996 concentric lathe lined coin. It is possible that lathe lines is the issue with my 1998 D. However, there is something very different about the 1998 D LMC. I still haven't figured it out. Probably die dents caused by some unknown reason.
