So, purchased my first "V" nickel today from ebay. 1905 P I believe. Most V nickels seem to be fairly priced. I'm not really looking for anything high grade, but I do have an album by Whitman I am considering working on. Are there any stoppers or anything ridiculously expensive for this series?

Depends on the grade, but if you're going for G-F specimens, only the '12-S will set you back $150 or so.

The 1913 will set you back a few million $s. Most people would consider the set complete without this coin. I think the Barber dime (1894-S) set and this set are among the most difficult sets because of these famous rarities. That's where coin collecting crosses over to insanity.

Aren't there only like 5 or 6 known 1913 V nickels in existence?

And half of those are in museums.

The 1885 and 1886 are the most expensive being about $250 each (in G4), the 1912S is about $150 in G4+. This is my set.

If you don't want to do the set, you can pick up Mint State Coins and do a type set. No Cents Cents Proof

Very nice. Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing the set at all. I just hate the thought of having blank spots lol

Of course, should have noted the '85 and '86.

Quote: And it might earn you a jail term as well! Why so? The 1913 nickels are legal to own.

hfjacinto - that's a lovely set! Humanist1287 - you never know, you might get one in circulation! I spent one in a transit ticket machine in Orlando (a cull 1892 with an attempted piercing) in December 2021 - I wonder what's happened to it?
