A known example of a much earlier year does not show the reeds coming around as far on the edge though. mrwhatisit Pillar of the Community United States 2954 Posts	Posted 11/18/2024 09:13 am Hmm, interesting I checked numista with your specs, and no foreign non-precious coin matches the weight and diameter. Therefore, it could be this planchet went through a reeding machine before being stuck with the 1902 dies at the mint, so a possible human assisted error. The weight we all know should be around 3.11g, but this as you said is underweight probably from being buried and corroded down to the current weight. Report this Post to the Staff

If it was a genuine error or even mint-assisted, I can't imagine it hanging around in circulation for so long. Rather, I bet it is a fake altogether or at least a real coin that has been reeded more recently and then chucked in a fire to cover up those tracks.
