Please take a look at this 2002 D Tennessee State Quarter with what I believe is missing something on the reverse. Thoughts?

Help us to help you - ask questions smartly, tell us what you think you see. Don't make us guess - that will get most of the people you want help from to simply ignore the request.

Well I am no expert on the minting process. Read up on it some so I guess my question would be is there any possibility that one side of the coin is not washed properly at the mint therefore it doesn't get the shiny appearance? This coin the obverse looks normal with the shiny appearance, but the reverse is consistently very dull looking a faint gray color. As Dearborn mentioned grease, how is grease involved in the process? Sorry if you think it is a dumb question, but as I have read on this site often there are no dumb questions. We are all here to learn. Thanks.

The coins are not washed individually at the mint after each strike. The planchet is rinsed before going thru the minting process.

At a mint, blank planchets are typically rinsed with water after the annealing process, which softens the metal, to remove any residue left from the heating process and ensure a clean surface before being struck into a coin; this rinsing often happens in a washing machine with specialized cleaning agents depending on the type of coin being produced.

Just remember : there will never be a dumb question for learning this hobby, you'll never learn if you don't ask a question or research.

Environmental staining can affect all of the coin or just a small spot. This coin might have been exposed to something with the reverse up and not affect the obverse at all.
